Masai Future - Conservation Centre
RIBA International design competition - 2nd Place
IThe Masai Mara National Reserve is a vast, scenic expanse of gently rolling African Savannah, celebrated worldwide for its extraordinary diversity of wildlife. Renowned as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this unique conservation haven is also home to the Masai tribe, who have preserved their rich cultural heritage over centuries. This remarkable landscape is a testament to the natural beauty of the Earth, a treasure we must protect at all costs.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES
With these premises in mind, the primary objectives for designing a contemporary Conservation Centre at the Oloololo Gate include:
- An architectural approach that harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, enhancing a sense of place and cultural identity.
- A place that educates and inspires visitors, fostering a deeper sense of responsibility and respect for this extraordinary environment.
INSPIRATION FROM THE MASAI VILLAGES
The design draws inspiration from the traditional configuration of the Masai “Manyatta” villages. The Conservation Centre is envisioned as a modern-day Masai village, with architectural elements adapted to reflect their cultural identity. The protective circular fence of the village, gate entrances, and houses arranged around a central area —all vital aspects of the village’s layout—are mirrored in the design. This not only resonates with the local community but also introduces visitors to authentic Masai architectural traditions upon their arrival.
SITE LAYOUT AND DESIGN STRATEGY
The Conservation Centre, along with the redesigned Oloololo Gate, new parking facilities, and pedestrian walkways, spans a total area of 2,700 m . The built-up area is strategically located along the main road to minimize the impact on the surrounding landscape.
