Iceland Movie Pavilion International Competition

Grjótagjá, Lake Mývatn, Iceland

Due to its geographic  location, Iceland is one of the few countries in the world with the longest bright days in summer and longest dark days in winter. This magical aspect leads to an attentive study of the lighting design so that the Pavilion can work throughout the entire year.
Externally a set of light fixtures, positioned at each inclined column, enhance the prismatic geometry of the building. The Vessel becomes visible from far while the right lighting level is granted for the people walking around the Pavilion. The pedestrian paths leading to the building are lit by small lamp posts , guiding  towards the entrances. The main path, with its up lights illuminating the adjacent inclined walls, offers a magical arrival experience bringing visitors in.
Internally, a cove system on the ceiling illuminates  the timber ceiling in each structural bay, bringing natural and diffuse warmth to the environment. The same light concept is used in the external terrace near the Cafeteria, a space that could be used for outdoor events also at dark hours. Whether the louvres system is open or closed, the design offers a gentle light so that the outdoor space can be enjoyed.
The exhibition space is illuminated through a set of linear lights located at the ceiling focusing  the light in the walls and the art. A specific design with linear tracks and movable and orientable fixture could be applied if believed to be more flexible.
At night the pavilion becomes a light sculpture, a landmark in the landscape. When not in use, the external lights transform the building into a lantern that melts into the incredible colors of the islandic night sky. When open and occupied, the internal soft light makes the pavilion transparent, engaging people and becoming a new attractive destination.
