Iceland Movie Pavilion International Competition

Grjótagjá, Lake Mývatn, Iceland

The Icelandic turf houses and their recognizable green roofs are emulated in this project through a single inclined green roof that takes advantage of all the environmental beneficial aspect this type of roof has.
The memory of such strong traditional architectural feature contributes to the reduction of the strain on drainage systems in cases of heavy rainfall. The rhythm of the building structure forms thirteen independent roof throughs, where local vegetation can naturally grow, improving the system that deals with both rain and snow. Green Concrete is proposed as main structural material for ease of construction, for its lifespan but mostly for its environmental aspects. Timber cladding is used for all secondary elements. Thanks to its punctual structural frame, the excavation for the foundation is minimized, with only the Cinema volume being sunken into the ground for no more than 2m.
The glazing system with openable louvres allows maximization of the surrounding views from inside and controls the internal light diffusion for the gathering and exhibition spaces around the Cinema. This system can be closed when heavy snowfall occurs. The Cinema, the heart of the Pavilion, is completely enclosed and independent and never affected by the direct light, granting its use at any time of the day.
The multiuse Cafeteria, located in the South part of the building, is characterized by an inclined facade (36°) designed especially to deal with the weather. The early morning natural light is maximized and controlled by the depth of the timber mullions that act as vertical louvres. The East and West facade systems allow for the glass module to be opened so that natural cross ventilation can be active during summer.
